Eye Health Research
Our Eye Health Research, led by Research & Intelligence Fellow Srivarenya “Sriv” Vempati, reviews what is known about eye health in The Gambia across three national surveys from 1986 to 2019. The country has made significant progress, including eliminating trachoma in 2021 and reducing blindness.
Yet more people are living with vision loss, cataract remains the leading cause of blindness, and there is little or no data on glaucoma or diabetic eye disease. Working with Dr. Winston Ceesay, head of The Gambia’s national eye hospital, we aim to fill these gaps and support better eye care for Gambian communities.
